On theWings of Angels
This
memorial sculpture is installed at Geralds Airport in the Caribbean island of Montserrat.
Mitch was commissioned to memorialize a New York City fireman, originally
from Montserrat, who was lost on "9/11" and the 19 Montserratians who were
killed in the disastrous volcanic eruption of June 25, 1997. The two wings of the
sculpture represent the flight of these dearly departed to their heavenly rest. The
installation was purposely tilted forward to convey a feeling of flight. On the left wing
is depicted a shield representing the fireman and on the right a 19 pointed splintered
star to represent the victims of the volcanic eruption.
Hopefully the viewer will not only be reminded of those lost in tragedy,
but also the resiliency of the human spirit to rise up from such tragedies. |
