Mitch is a sculptor who uses the intrinsic textures of stones and wood in
an attempt to create distinct forms which comment on the illusionary and chaotic nature of
our existence. He hopes to provoke a reaction or emotional response to his work by
challenging the viewers intellect since he believes that the eyes cannot see what
the mind cannot comprehend. He was primarily a poet until 1987. At that time, he
traveled to Zimbabwe, Africa where he experienced the magnificent work of the Shona
artists and fell in love with stone carving. Since his father nurtured his passion for
art, he chose the artist-name Mitch to honor him.
He has participated in many shows and exhibits. He has a commissioned piece in a NYC
neighborhood garden and a permanent installation in an upstate Fire Dept. Most recently,
he participated in the Museum Without Walls exhibit in Central Park.
He was recently commissioned to do a memorial sculpture in the Caribbean Island of
Monserrat.
